Augmented Reality
Personally, I do not mind a little personalization in my Digital World- my Facebook, the Ads in the app and on my computer, the ones that pop up when I’m playing games on my iPhone or iPad. They show me things like puzzle games that I might like since most of my phone and ipad games are strategy games. And I don’t really mind- probably because for the most part, I have (in a way) created my own filter bubble? I actively choose on Pinterest and Facebook when to get rid of certain things because I don’t want them on my screen- I’d rather see something more useful or something. I don’t mind that after a few strokes of my mouse or my thumb, I’m going to see small bars of advertisements from Target, TOMS, Hollister, VS and PINK, and Amazon. The advertisements usually only pop up to the side or as a suggested post because they are things that I’ve looked at before or need to remember to buy. If I want a new pair of TOMS and I looked at like 10 of them but put 3 or 4 away into a basket or wishlist or looked at them the most, it’s kinda nice that Facebook or some other website is going to be showing, reminding me that these are the ones I liked most. Or maybe because I have such a bad memory, this is just a nuisance for others. Sometimes I look over at the bar and I find that Target has a bunch of different kid of milk steamers and then I will find a cheaper one because of that bar! Horray London Fog!
I have more than Pinterest account so that I can keep certain subjects separated: my iPad has stuff for home recipes and baby clothes and decorating and drinks….so the ipad thinks I’m a woman with morning sickness…. My phone has boards with jokes for my brother, travelling tips, clothes that I can wear to school (I’m pretty lazy and sometimes I’m blessed with some inspiration) and then I have wedding stuff- so Pinterest thinks I’m getting married now too but that’s really for my sister’s wedding.
And my third account is alllllll about writing for more than one genre and then advice on things I can do in the field of writing. I have created my own filter bubble I suppose- but really I have always felt like I was just trying to keep things organized. And I keep my Facebook filled with random facts, and videos and photos of cute babies and funny animals and then my family. I created Facebook so that I could keep in touch with my family who live all over the place these days….not to sound ignorant, but I didn’t make my Facebook so I can see my parents Share News videos that also have a lot of hateful things said in the Comments section. My point is: I made my own Filter Bubble in the Digital Space.
I do think it’s really impressive that people have found ways to manipulate the filter bubble with the intent to manipulate the filter bubble of a potential consumer. I took a Search Engine Optimization class and had to figure out how to write effectively that Google Semantics would “pick up” on our content and ‘boost’ audience traffic on the websites we had to build and it’s pretty tricky….so koodos.
